Hurricane Katrina Continues to Break Homes Apart

Hurricane Katrina raged through Louisiana with gale force winds and flooding rains. Protective levees broke leaving thousands of homes destroyed and under water killing more than 1,800 people.

Many people have rushed to aid those in need during the aftermath of Katrina, but the stress has been too much for some couples to handle. A study was conducted to examine the effect that Katrina had on relationships. The study found that the struggles and stress people have experienced in the months and years after the historic hurricane have had their own devastating effects. Many post-Katrina couples have seriously contemplated divorce, and a large percentage has already begun or completed the process.

One Katrina survivor sadly admitted that his wife of 16-years has seriously mentioned divorce on several occasions. The family's home was nearly destroyed during the storm, and the husband has spent all of his extra money, effort and time attempting to turn the inhabitable house into a home again. During the rebuilding effort the family of five has been forced to live in a cramped FEMA trailer. While they sincerely appreciate having a roof over their head, the wife admits that the space is unfit to properly raise children.

The husband does not blame his wife for her feelings, and he admits that it has been very difficult for them. The couple who used to never argue or fight before living in the makeshift home has been to counseling and spent hours praying in their church. After losing his job the husband's stress level hit an all-time high and caused a heart attack. He has now recuperated and hopes to turn at least a portion of their home into a livable space in an effort to reduce the couple's stress and give them a real opportunity to work through their problems.
