Considering divorce? Worry less about judgment from others.

There are numerous grounds for divorce in Georgia, including mental incapacity at the time of marriage, adultery, willful desertion, repeated substance abuse and cruelty. However, many couples are hesitant to file for divorce, regardless of how justified doing so may be.

For a large number of people who are considering separation, thinking about and planning a divorce can be emotionally taxing, and in many situations, it even leads them to change their minds. One common concern among couples is how their neighbors and friends might react to a divorce.

They worry that their personal lives, as well as those of their children, will be negatively affected by a divorce. Many experts agree that divorce is still viewed as taboo in American society. While many couples think about divorce and even discuss separation in private, they feel a social pressure to make their marriage appear functional and happy.

One expert suggests that if a larger number of individuals were forthcoming about their thoughts on divorce, it would encourage unhappily married couples to worry less about judgment from other people. Subsequently, more people could benefit from ending negative relationships.

Experts stress that concerns about what others might think about your marriage should be kept to a minimum. While some parts of your community are bound to react negatively, others may agree with the choice, seeing it as a positive life change. In most cases, experts explain, someone who reacts negatively to a divorce may themselves have negative feelings about their own or their parent's divorce, even though a large number of divorces are justified and result in happier lives for both parties.
